今週のアフタヌーンクラス(平尾本校)

This week we have completed Petra. We learned that the people of Petra had worshipped the Arab gods and also a few deified kings from their own culture. In the 4th century, Christianity came to Petra for a short time. Between 629 and 632 Islam conquered Petra, and the Christian and Arab religions were replaced by Islam. We finished up Petra with learning about its decline. Sea based trade routes became increasingly important, thereby decreasing the need for land based trade routes which Petra earnestly needed. Also in 363, a large earthquake struck Petra and destroyed many of its buildings and its water management system.
After Petra we started work on the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. It is a 119 mile long single lane canal. Along the canal the Ballah By-Pass and the Great Bitter Lake are the only places where ships may pass each other. We briefly touched base on the ancient history of the Suez Canal. We learned that some kings of the past attempted to create the canal as early as the mid 1800 BC. Next week we will continue working on the Suez Canal.
